Jacob OdipoA grassroots community organizer and member of the Bunge La Mwananchi movement.

The Late Jacob Odipo passionately organized and shaped Bunge La Mwananchi into a formidable social movement that has become the socio-political home for many grassroots activists struggling to bring about social change in Kenya. Jacob Odipo was a strategist, debater and courageous activist who dedicated his life to
building social movements in Kenya and East Africa. He was inspired to establish Bunge La Mwananchi chapters across the country and worked with many other progressive forces like the Movement for Political Accountability (MOPA); Kenya Against Impunity Network ( KAI); Progessive Parties Alliance (PROPA); and with student movements
(SONU) and the SAFINA party of Hon. Paul Muite.

He was the Editor in chief of the Bunge La Mwananchi newsletter and constantly goaded the youth with his vision of hope and resistance. He used many tactics to educate the masses on the question of social change in Kenya and our mother land Africa. He made a great contribution to the constitutional debate that has given Kenya a new
dispensation. He fought ardently for the people's rights to social justice, food , water and healthcare - even when he was admitted to the Siaya District Hospital he continued to question Kenya's healthcare system which denied him his basic right as he was forced to buy drugs and syringes in order to get treatment.

As a young Pan- Africanist and in order to advance African unity, Jacob Odipo attended the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Intellectual Festival held in Dar Es Salaam  University in April 2010. He was there too in the World Social Forum in 2007 at Kasarani, interacting with the Latin America delegation, learning about their political
parties and vibrant social movements.

We deeply mourn the fact that our comrade Odipo, a human rights activist, died as a victim of poverty-related disease which is the result of a neoliberal economy which exposes our public healthcare institutions to the greed of market forces and the corruption networks in Kenya.

Bunge La Mwananchi Member and
Comrade of the Late Jacob Odipo.
