Syed Hadi Naqvi – Usdaw Organising Award 2024

On Tuesday 10th September, First Generation British Born Pakistani – Syed Hadi Naqvi won the TUC Organising Award 2024.

Syed (Hadi) has been an Usdaw member since 2019 and became actively involved when he took the role of shop steward in August 2020. At that time, his workplace was grappling with pandemic-related issues. Joining a small team of just seven, Hadi played a crucial role in expanding to 20 members by providing support and guidance to less experienced reps. His leadership and dedication in building trade union representation on site have been pivotal, including efforts to address safety concerns and improve employee welfare, such as securing over £20,000 for safety equipment and advocating for better food options in the staff canteen.

Hadi has effectively represented members on various issues, ensuring their rights are protected. In one case, he helped a member struggling with migraines avoid disciplinary action by demonstrating that the condition was a disability under the Equality Act. He negotiated a shift change that alleviated the members symptoms without financial loss. In another instance, Hadi addressed bullying and harassment by a manager by organising a collective grievance. Although initially rejected, Hadi pursued the issue through the Union’s Legal Department, leading to a successful Employment Tribunal case. His persistence and dedication were crucial to this victory.

Since becoming a rep, Hadi has significantly increased membership density from 50% to 75% at a site with nearly 1,200 employees, adding around 300 members. He has organised various campaigns to enhance union vitality and ensure members benefit from services like Legal Plus and Free Will Writing. Additionally, Hadi has promoted anti-racism initiatives and engaged actively in his trade union branch. His involvement includes presenting key issues at the Annual Delegate Meeting and keeping members informed about important motions and developments.
