Associate Professor of History at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He holds a PhD from Northwestern University, and is author of the book Taifa: Making Nation and Race in Urban Tanzania (Ohio University Press, 2012). He is author of numerous articles, and is currently working on a biography of the Tanzanian politician Oscar Kambona.
